I was driving through West Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona this weekend. Very late on Saturday night, I was driving on a rural desert road in New Mexico. I hadn't seen any signs of human life in over an hour, and I saw pure darkness in all directions. I pulled the car over on the side of the road. Not only was the night perfectly clear (duh, it's the desert) but there was no moon that night. I looked up, and to my complete exhilaration, I saw what seemed like MILLIONS of stars. I could see the strip of Milky Way, constellations...just countless stars. It was a moment of rare beauty.
This picture was my attempt to capture this experience on my camera. You can see a couple stars, but.....ummmm.....not very many.

One of the things I miss from my childhood is darkness. Back then, when my parents turned out the lights at bedtime, it was pitch black dark. You couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Eventually Mercury vapor lights popped up behind every house and then everything changed. No more darkness.

I really enjoyed your photo of darkness.

I thought I saw some stars there in your photo but they were just specks of dust on my monitor. Sigh.
